Paul Merson has argued that Chelsea’s ambitious pursuit of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raheem Sterling this summer would be worth it to give the Blues frontline a boost.
The Blues have struggled in recent seasons to find a main striker after successive summers in which big names such as Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku have struggled to settle despite costing more than £150million together.
Werner remains hovering around the first team after two years at the club following his £53million move from RB Leipzig, while Lukaku is now back on loan at Inter Milan, despite having left the Serie A side a year ago signed for £98 million.
Cristiano Ronaldo has informed Manchester United that he wants to leave the club
But the Blues are reportedly in talks with Cristiano Ronaldo over a sensational move for the Manchester United star, who has told the club he wants to leave so he can continue playing in the Champions League at the age of 37.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes the move is ‘a bull’s eye for Chelsea’, but stressed that any deal should be completed sooner rather than later.
“I think he might be tempted to leave as it goes — as it goes,” Merson wrote in his Sky column.
Paul Merson believes Ronaldo would ‘tick all the boxes’ if he signed for Chelsea
“We hear that he wants to play in the Champions League, so I think that could happen.
‘I think it will be a win-win situation if he goes’ [to Chelsea]† I think it should be resolved sooner rather than later – the season is in four or five weeks.
“It is clear that Man Utd will not play in the Champions League for a long time. I don’t know why this wasn’t nipped in the bud early on.
The Blues are also on the hunt for Raheem Sterling, who is also in the frame to move on
“It took so long. I’d be a little disappointed if I were a Man Utd fan.”
Thomas Tuchel’s quest for a goal forward has also linked the Blues with Manchester City star Raheem Sterling.
New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is looking to make an immediate impact at the club this summer and the Blues are in advanced talks for the England international.

City are willing to let Sterling leave for a fee of around £50million as he only has one year left on his contract and there are no plans to extend it.
“I think Sterling would be a great asset. I would be concerned if Manchester City sold Sterling as you sell a lot of goals,” Merson said.
“People always go to me, ‘He’s always on the farthest post to tap them in’. He doesn’t push anyone out of the way to achieve those goals. It’s an art for what he does and he will be a huge miss for Manchester City next season if he leaves.”
