Australian high jumper Eleanor Patterson says she did not perform at her best in the Commonwealth Games final.

Patterson won gold in the high jump at the Oregon World Championships in Athletics in late July and admitted that such a big win just before the Commonwealth Games could have made an impact.

But she congratulated Jamaica’s Lamara Distin on her gold medal and said she would come back stronger this year in the remaining events and, hopefully, the Diamond League final.

“It’s bittersweet. I didn’t perform,” Patterson told Channel Seven.

“Lamara was the better athlete of the day. I’m impressed with her and proud of her, but I’m quite frustrated with myself for not coming here today to perform as I usually do.”

Patterson said she didn’t know why she was so bad at Birmingham.

“I had a bit of a sore ankle, but no apologies. I struggled to get my rhythm, I wasn’t turned on enough. I don’t know, it’s just really frustrating. I didn’t try my best,” Patterson told Channel Seven.

“There’s that down but I’ve set myself on a really high standard and I should be able to perform and I didn’t take that much hat off to Lamara for getting the gold.

“I’m human. It’s a frustrating day for me. I’m mad at my own performance.”
