The Obamas Crash the African American Film Festival in Martha’s Vineyard

Barack and MichelleObama made a surprise appearance at a film festival this week — perhaps unsurprisingly…it was at Martha’s Vineyard.

The former First Couple took the stage at the Martha’s Vineyard African-American Film Festival on Friday, where they spoke a few words before a screening of their Netflix document, “Descendant.” As you can see they were received very warmly… the audience seemed shocked that they showed.

In the end, they each made comments… BO spoke about the power of storytelling — Black stories in particular — and praised the festival organizers for allowing African Americans to do just that through their event.

He said, “[I]It’s one of the strengths of this festival, and the work the Rances have done is to bring out stories that have all too often been lost over time. Because we believe that everyone’s story matters. Everyone has a sacred story that motivates, moves us. It’s not just a matter of nostalgia, it propels us into the present and the future.”

Michelle hit that point home by noting that the older generation should encourage their youth to really talk to their grandparents and great-grandparents — and take in their history while they still can. She also took some playful photos at IG and TikTok trends.

The audience felt what she was saying… because they audibly agreed with everything. Pretty cool to see them here — even though they’re low-key in MV quite a bit. Of course she have a summer house there (actually a mansion), so they are no strangers to the area.

BTW, as for them? Netflix Supported Document is actually about… “Descendant” includes a small community in Alabama that has descendants of the Clotilda, one of the last slave ships to send Africans to the United States, just as it was banned nationally.
